This text will remain a standard work in the field that belongs on the desk of every dedicated sinologist. At the same time, it manifests an opening sally, and one hopes that this text will stir others in the field to respond to the issues raised in the common quest for a more authentic understanding and deeper appreciation of Confucius and his thought.

It creates no new problems, and by providing for the passage of time between early and late layers of the texts, it solves many old problems of internal incoherence which must otherwise bedevil the reader of the Analects, or of any classical text.
To these problems such as the encounter of Confucius with rude recluses from another century , Professor Watson seems to offer no solution.

However, the difference between the idea of the Mandate of Heaven and Confucianism, Confucius gave more weight on virtue of common people. Confucius said that a gentleman is a person who is familiar with what is right, by contrast a small man is a person who desires profit first.
He believed people should cultivate virtue and become gentlemen, and he stressed the importance of study as a way of cultivating virtue. This thought was reflected by the social needs of his day. At that time, rulers needed wise men who can help with ruling their states and solving the social disorder of their states, so they looked for educated people with good ideas.
Confucius beyond the Analects
These different social needs from the Zhou dynasty made many philosophers think about the cosmos and education, and finally these movements led a proliferation of new ideas in the Spring and Autumn period and Warring States period. Confucius was one of these philosophers, and has become one of the most important philosophers in East Asian history.

Although there is no doubt Confucius has been played an important role in the culture and history of East Asia, we cannot say that he made great achievements in his life time. He had probably been an official of the state of Lu, but he left the court because of his upright personality.
